Ystradgynlais War Memorial

Rebuilt 2016

The War Memorial in Ystradgynlais was remodelled in 2016, to feature updated memorial plaques which include some spelling corrections of the names of local men among the fallen, as well as a few additional names, who had been left off when the memorial was first created in the 1970s. The access to the memorial was improved by the creation of a single gateway into Gorsedd Park and a new pathway and base area around the war memorial.

It was opened in time for Remembrance Day 2016, and it is of note that 2016 was the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, in which many local men fought, and several lost their lives.

The new Ystradgynlais War Memorial was erected in 2016.

Construction - 2016

Ystradgynlais War Memorial

These photographs were taken in Autumn 2016, and the accompanying text describes the process viewed as it was underway.

A concrete platform was laid at the start of September, including a path to replace the previous access over grass.

The large stone from the old monument is central to the new design, but is now anchored at ground level, not raised high.

Two wings are being constructed to either side of the large central stone.

The new concrete path to the memorial is reached from the now opened-up gateway area.

When complete, the new memorial will look pretty much like this photograph at a distance, taken in mid September 2016.

The new memorial will be easily visible from the main road running through Ystradgynlais.

The core of the two new wings to the war memorial has been constructed of breeze blocks.

This view from towards the centre of Gorsedd Park looks out to the war memorial and the bridge.

The two wings have been dressed in stone, apart from the central recessed area where the new plaques will go.
